J.Crew: Augusta Peep Toes Review

These are J.Crew's Augusta Peep Toes (item #14174), which were originally $225, with select colors marked down to $139.99 right now.  These shoes were available in golden desert, soft apricot, and faded aqua.  J.Crew describes the shoe as such:
Vintage-inspired, these Italian-leather slingbacks are wrapped at the toe with an impeccable satin bow. Man-made lining and sole. 3 1/2" self-covered heel. Made in Italy. Available at the Madison Avenue Collection Store.
I will be honest - I have been in absolute love with these shoes since they debuted.  I was totally in love with all the colors, but especially the blue.  Unfortunately, by the time these shoes went on sale (coupled with the 20% off promotion), blue was sold out in my size.  I am wearing a size 6 in the golden desert color.

Well, I am happy to report that these shoes are as wonderful as I was hoping they would be!  I am still totally in love with them.  I was a tad bit wary of the yellow color, as I'm not the biggest fan of that mustard-y yellow color, but I think the bright yellow bow really helps make this shoe.  [Plus it helps that I recently purchased a yellow skirt from the lovely FFM that I think will match these shoes perfectly.]

Above are the pictures from a distance (Psycho Dog making a cameo).  I have to say that I am a huge fan of heels, especially for the slimming effect they can have on your legs.  The below pictures are close-up/level with the shoes, and I think they will give you a better idea of how the shoes look.

The sizing on the shoes is fairly true to size, but the ankle strap is pretty loose.  While my feet pretty much come to the back of the footbed, the ankle strap is a bit too large.  It doesn't hamper the wearing of the shoe, which is nice, but it can make the shoes appear a teeny bit too big, which is unfortunate.  The toebox is a medium, comfortable width - not too narrow, not too wide.  The peep-toe is not overly peepish, and is very comfortable.

The shoe overall is very comfortable.  I think it's a really adorable shoe that will work with a wide variety of outfits.  I don't think I'd wear these anywhere where the odds of getting something spilled on them is higher than normal (say, a bar), but I would definitely wear these to work, or out on a date night with The Boyfriend, or just any special dress-up occasion.  Below are a couple more pictures of the shoes alone.

What do you think?  Do you own these shoes?  Which colors do you like?  Where would you wear these shoes?

These shoes are just to die for - in every colour. I'm partial to the blue as well. I think they would be great for work or for dressier occassions. The gold is great, and very 'neutral.'

So I have been looking for an excuse NOT to order these shoes... but you just totally gave me (another) reason that I absolutely must get them. they look great on you!

@violet - I agree- they will definitely spruce up any outfit!

@HeidiG - thank you! I love that they are pretty versatile, even though they are dressier.

@Julia - You should get a pair!!

@Kelleen - I just saw that! They didn't have them in my size though, which is too bad, because I LOVE the blue!

@Gigi - Thank you! Have you tried them on?

@Cate - Thanks! I LOVE heels, I would be lost without them.

@Paper Bag Princess - Oh, I know, I was sad that they didn't have the blue when they were on sale - they must have been popular! I do like the neutrality of the yellow, like you said - very versatile!

@Lauren - Thank you! And you SHOULD get them, haha - they are so cute! Did you end up getting them?

@Pakcola - I know, all the blue ones were gone very quickly :( I hope they will make a shoe like this again soon!

These are definitely very cute shoes! I landed on your blog while I was searching for J.Crew peep toe shoe reviews. I've never tried on or bought a pair from them before and have my eye on a pair of peep toe pumps. By any chance, do you know if their pumps run true to size? I usually wear 7.5 in other shoes, but I was reading somewhere that for whatever reason J.Crew pumps run slightly big, and to go half size down. Been reading that there is a slight gap at the back where my feet will slide out as I walk. Any insight to this? Thanks!

Hi Anonymous! I have never really had a problem with J.Crew pumps, and I own a few pairs. One shoe (Cate patent slingbacks) I actually sized up in, because the toebox was a little snug (and because they were only available in a half size up, so I didn't really have a choice :)), but I pretty much always get my regular size (6). I have a couple pairs of 5.5s, and they are a bit tight in the toe, but I would start with your regular size. I haven't had any problems with my regular size so far. Hope this helps!

Hi Jenny!

Thanks so much for your reply! The pumps I've been eyeing are also peep toes, but slingbacks. I'm so happy that you replied because I know you posted this shoe review a while back looking at the dates. I suppose I should I just get it anyways and put an insert in if it's a little too big, and hope for the best! They're too cute to pass up especially when they're on sale!

oops, I meant to say peep toe pumps, but not slingbacks. I'm getting too excited now.
